The last leg of our multi country euro trip and probably my favorite. We took a train from Paris Porte Maillot station to Heidelberg, about five hours with just a couple of train changes. Upon arrival to the bus stop in Heidelberg I ordered an Uber to get us the rest of the way to the hotel, less than 10 minutes. We stayed at the Heidelerg Exzellenz Hotel. A beautiful hotel with spacious, individually decorated rooms, most with vaulted ceilings. Originally I had dinner reservations at Das Boot but we were a little wore out from traveling so I cancelled the res to give us a little more time to relax. Once we settled in we decided to walk around and find a good spot for dinner. I started regretting my choice of canceling our reservation when we quickly learned everywhere was full. We finally found a restaurant that was able to squeeze us in. The Golden Sheep or Zum Güldenen Schaf. Our waiter let us know that there was only a few Schnitzel left so we quickly got our order in. There were several options on how to have it prepared, I went with pepper cream sauce and spaetzle. Dinner was fantastic and we headed back to the hotel to get a goods night sleep. But not before ice cream at Schmelzpunkt Schokolade &Eiskrem.
Day two, so excited for Heidelberg Palace! One of the most famous ruins in the world! I was in complete awe of this truly remarkable landmark. Guests can purchase a combination ticket at the Kornmarkt or in a combo tour guide here. The castle ticket includes the return trip with the mountain railway to the castle, entry to the castle courtyard, a visit to the barrel building and entry to the German Pharmacy Museum. The trolley provides a stunning view of Heidelberg and over the Neckar Valley. Absolutely breathtaking!
Weinstube Schnitzelbank for dinner, another hidden treasure off of one of the main streets. We sat outside under a covered patio and shared the picnic table with a few people. The food was amazing, probably my favorite meal in Germany and I loved the quaint atmosphere! We rode electric scooters back to the hotel to call it a night.
The third and final day in Heidelberg. We had the day to spend before we had to catch our last train. First we grabbed lunch at Hemingways.
While the day started off misting it turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day. So we walked around old town where we had rushed through because of the rain the first couple of nights. We decided to grab a drink at Pier 4, a floating restaurant on the Neckar with a beautiful rooftop terrace on the upper deck. Boasting a view of the Old Bridge and the picturesque Neckar Valley, the roof terrace, is unrivaled in the Rhine-Neckar region. From there we walked down the river towards the Heidelberg Bridge Monkey. We took Hauptstraße back, which is Germain for "main road" and there were so many shops, cafes & pubs along the way!
From Heidelberg we took yet another train to Frankfurt. We said our goodbye's to Harli at Heidelberg Main as she was going back to Landstuhl from there. The train was smooth as we are professional trains riders at this point. From the station we caught an Uber to take us to Ibis Hotel. I chose this hotel because it shuttles to the airport at no additional cost. The rooms were small but well kept and perfect for our last nights stay. We walked to Zum Treffpunkt for dinner. I got pasta and it was exceptionally tasty.
Last morning in Europe. This is where I reflected on our travel and ground covered in ten days. 6 flights, 8 trains, multiple ubers, a few shuttles, a couple trollies, 128 flights of stairs and 160,998 steps during the trip. We saw a small portion of Europe.
